Is it Mario Bros. or is it Tetris?
It's BOTH. You have to play
Tuper Tario Tros. - it's very compelling and has got my mind spinning to what other great games would taste great together...
Pac-Man and Burger Time?
Sinistar and Quake?
God of War and Legend of Zelda?
Hi Scott :)
ReplyDeleteTry the updated version on Kongregate : Tuper Tario Tros.
We added a "scrolling acceleration" for tetris lamer, and a little bit more time for the boss battle.
Glad you enjoyed it !
Hi Scott. Just finished watching your level design session from GDC 2009. It is indeed a great talk. I couldn't help to think that there is great genius in anything that can make standing around in line seem like a worth while experience.
ReplyDeleteAside from designing games I also draw my own comics and I thought that the Illusionary Narrative is a lot like the story telling that happens between panels. A good example in mainstream comics is your typical Avengers fight. Most of the time there is a splash page followed by discreet snips of action. You never really see the whole fight an yet you feel like everyone just had their hands full with work. Certainly does save on an artist time to not have to draw all that.
My last bit has to do with the anticipation of encounters. Many games suffer from this. You never see the boss character until you fight it and then its gone. Usually leaving you thinking its a big progression lock and thats that. Bio Shock 2's big sister, Metroids Prime Ridley and perhaps most notably the Red Devil in Ghost and Goblins are good examples of giving you a face to go with your hardships.

Believe it or not, I decided to sign up for my own blog for the sole reason of commenting on your blog. I just got done reading your whole blog (Yes, all of it), and I have to say, I found a lot of it to be very eye opening, especially your stuff on boss battles, platform games, and the Disney talk.
ReplyDeleteI'm currently going to school (Currently a junior) to get a degree in video game programming from DigiPen in Washington state, but what I really want to do is design video games. Even more specifically, I'm interested in designing levels for video games. Seeing as you've been in the industry for quite some time, do you by any chance have any points that haven't been mentioned in your blog thus far (Perhaps good steps to take to get a foot in the door, such as creating cool level with 3DS Max or anything like that)?
Thanks,
Paul Kankiewicz

ReplyDeletePS: Tuper Tario Tros was an VERY interesting concept. I wish I was better at Tetris though, heh. By the way, isn't Darksiders essentially a mix between God of War and Legend of Zelda?
ReplyDeleteGod of War and Legend of Zelda?? That's crazy talk! Who would ever create such a thing??
ReplyDelete:)
Sinistar + Quake could be pretty cool; running around in an FPS trying to stop enemies from gathering the parts to build the boss.
ReplyDeleteI'm reminded of the Thundarr the Barbarian episode where the apemen are running around the ruins of Hollywood collecting the pieces of a life-sized robot King Kong!
@ Paul,
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading the entire blog! That's quite a compliment.
To answer your question, yes, there are plenty of things I have to talk about - but I have been saving them for something I will be blogging about next week.
Stay tuned!!
